GIRL POWER

Deb Kelly has been at it again, catching 4 jewfish over the last two fishing club meets on the South Coast. The smallest was 3 kilos and the biggest was an impressive meter long fish about 12 kilos in weight!

There have been a good number of jewfish caught by anglers putting in the time and with the expertise needed to catch them but few have matched the results that Deb has achieved in recent times.

Yes and to rub things in even more Deb happily runs her hairdressing saloon by day and lets all her clients know just how much she is whipping the lads in the fishing stakes… Thanks Deb, that’s great.

Meanwhile further north, the Ladies from the Ocean Beach Hotel Fishing Club hit the water and again gave the lads a shellacking...

While reef fishing Wendy DeBritt curiously asked her hubbie; with just a little sarcasm, “what’s this red fish I have here?” It was a prized snapper and a good sized one at that!

But to top things off; while fishing at South Beach, Shellharbour using pilhards on ganged hooks, Jennifer Martin hooked what she thought was a good sized salmon or tailor.

It ended up being a 1.2m long broadbillsword fish that weighed 4 kilos. This is a first for Shellharbour, and one of very few broadbill caught off the beach in the whole world! That’s as good as lady luck gets!

I hope all the fellas out there can send me something that will save a little face…this is getting hard to write about. In the interim I am only mentioning fish, not who caught them.

SNOWY MOUNTAINS SPAWN RUN HITS TOP GEAR

Col Sinclair reports that the Eucumbene River has received over 100mm of rain over the last week or so and, as a result, the spawn run trout fishery kicked into top gear.  It's not just brown trout though, Col's clients caught 6 rainbow trout averaging a kilo in a recent dusk session.

The rains were some of the best in six months and as expected the Eucumbene river got high and discolored but is expected to clear in coming weeks, provided more heavy rain doesn’t come. Despite the lower than usual water clarity, Col's clients have still spotted and hooked a good number of reasonable sized brown trout.

The mouth of the Eucumbene River is approximately half way between Hughes Creek and Anglers Reach at the moment, and there seems to be two main types of fishing.

Above the Providence Portal inlet is your classic brown trout spawning activity, with male trout fighting for the tail of the pool so they can be the first to meet with the females as they move in.

Below the Portal, the trout are hopping a few pools per night and also during the day when it is overcast and windy enough to offer the fish cover.

These fish are resting up in deeper slower pools in numbers during the rest of the time and this is the best place to cast.

In the murky water, Col found a flash back bead head on the point and a large red and black matuka on the point was ideal, but anything that is easy for the trout to spot is also working well. Col used four triple zero split shots to get to the river bed-you need to be touching bottom to get consistent results.

Celtas and Count Down Rapalas , especially the new Golden Alburnus color are also getting good results.

See you on the water.
