REEFS

The snapper fishing has been a bit more predictable. In between farming oysters Jim and family started in close in 8 meters of water and caught some small pinkie sized snapper at anchor. They then moved out to 20 meters of water and landed a nice 2 kg specimen on the drift.

Later in the day they fished 60 meters of water near the wave rider buoy and caught a few more snapper around the kilo mark. Young Valais Yianarros was the star of the day catching nearly as many snapper as all the boys put together!

KAYAKING THE SNOWIES IN WINTER?

At first thought you would think that kayaking in lake Eucumbene or Jindabyne in winter would be way too cold, and it usually is, but on the better days some anglers are rugging up and getting out on the water for some good trout fishing!

Glen Fish and friends put their kayaks in at Anglers Reach recently and paddled up under the old bridge spinning with soft plastics along the way. They caught some nice trout, one of which was a big rainbow about 55 cm long!

Personally I’ll be waiting until it warms up a little before putting my yak on these lakes, but as Glen said: people will kayak at this time of year and enjoy it ‘if’ they check the weather forecast carefully and take all the necessary safety precautions.

Anglers reach is semi protected which makes it a bit safer to fish in a small craft and before the weather turned bad as forecast Glen was surprised to see about 7 other kayakers out hooking into trout.

FISHING AUSTRALIA

This weekend on Fishing Australia I check out one of the South Coasts true gems: Lake Conjola. Amongst the content is some estuary fishing basics in the Kayak with my kids Caitlin and Emily, some more advanced whiting fishing using poppers with Fishing World Editor Jim Harnwell. Jan and Darren Redman take me through some beach fishing basics I then target some snapper on soft plastics. You can catch the show, Saturday afternoons on WIN and other regional networks, check your local TV guide for details.

See you on the water.
