The run of bluefin tuna along the south coast continues, but catching these big fish; presents quite a challenge.
When the weathers been calm anglers specializing in tuna fishing have been heading over 22 miles off Bermagui where big bluefin have been in surprisingly good numbers.
The magic mark is between 150’ 33 and 150’ 45 where the water is over 1000 fathoms deep, but you’ll still need to troll around once in this area to pinpoint the tuna.
Luke Evans from BCF in Fyshwick reports that once a school is located the bluefin have been hungry with triple hookups the norm on any of the well known tuna lures.
Most of the bluefin over recent weeks have been between 70 kg and 120 kg with one whopper weighing in at 127 kg!
In closer around the 200 fathom mark the eddies in the East Australian Current have also brought good albacore fishing to the south coast. Amongst the more standard techniques a few anglers have found that a jerk shad shaped soft bait fished on an 8 kilo spin stick is just as effective as a pilchard and lots more fun. (Slam Baits esp white, blue yellow and pink)
Some great tuna fishing that, but for safety’s sake please make sure you only head out when the weather is calm and fish with an experienced captain or on a credible charter boat. In the meantime this weekend on Fishing Australia I continue my adventure along South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula with some whiting and salmon fishing and to top things off my friends and I take dive with the great white sharks…you can catch all the action on WIN this Saturday at 5 pm.
