About three weeks back Simon Kaminskas dropped in some very good tips about uni knots under the "Fish N Tips" section of my Blog (Simon's previous Blog posting can be viewed here). Well, Simon's emailed me an update with some important additional information that he'd like to add... over to you, Simon.
"As a post-script to my article on tests with the uni knot, I also tested the uni knot as a loop knot. This yielded some very interesting results as well. What I found was if I pulled up the uni knot really tight with pliers to "lock" it as a loop knot, which is what I used to do, it actually weakens the knot a lot.
I found I only got the curious 100% strength results if you didn't pull it up really tight, but left it so that the knot slipped and clinched up against the eyelet when heavy pressure came on. In the field, this means the loop knot might tighten and need retying after every big fish, but that is not a bad thing. Alternatively, in the field if you're using really heavy trace you might get away with a trace knot weakened by being pulled up really tight."
Simon.
Great little tip that Simon.
I am currently testing a few new knots which I will write about when results are finalized.
Tight Lines.
