Silstar's “Just Like Dads” combos are designed for the young aspiring angler. There are a lot of cheap combos on the market targeting the younger generation however this combo is designed to outlast and help teach the fishing basics.

Silstar have cleverly constructed a 3ft 5” rod with solid tip in two bright colors. The design is light, thin and strong, whilst retaining a flexible tip action. My older kids have had them for 3 years already and have passed one down to our youngest child Hailey who is just 1 year old.

I would say the JLD combos are suitable for about 1 to 8 year old children unless the child is advanced at fishing or is targeting bigger fish with mum or dads help.

One of the best things I have found about these combos is that the rod is short enough to be handled by children without being banged into everything else around them. They also pack easily, thanks to their short length.

The JLD combos are ideal for all the common freshwater species such as trout, golden perch, redfin and carp. They are also perfect for estuary and bay species like flathead, bream, tommy ruff, salmon, tailor, gar fish, trevally, mullet small barra and jacks, and many more kids species. Note that the line on the reel is quite strong and kids I know have landed snapper to 3 kg using this line.

Down the track, when the youngster gets a bit more experience you can easily up grade the reel to a more expensive model such as a Okuma Aqueous or Silstar Strike in a 30 size. Another option available, is to go for a Fishing Australia Rod and Reel Combo. For example, the FA 662 SPL or even one of the bigger Fishing Australia models, if you wish.

The JLD's are a brilliant introduction into the world of fishing for a junior and I am extremely happy Silstar have put so much thought and effort into these outfits.
